Patas Monkey

The patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas), sometimes called the hussar monkey, is a ground-dwelling primate known for its speed and agility. Found in the open grasslands and savannas of Africa, this monkey can run at speeds of up to 55 kilometers per hour (34 mph), making it the fastest primate in the world.

Patas monkeys have reddish-brown fur and long limbs, perfectly adapted for life on the ground. They live in small social groups, primarily led by females, and their diet includes fruits, seeds, and insects. In zoos, patas monkeys delight visitors with their playful nature and lightning-fast movements. Education about these monkeys highlights their vulnerability to habitat destruction and the importance of preserving Africa’s savanna ecosystems.
